The Psychological Response to Torture

There are microorganisms that torture you for reasons of their own. They have evolved over, I don't know, millions or hundreds of thousands of years to overcome them. Then there's a thing where you get into a compulsive state where it doesn't go away. You scratch in a way that makes it itch more and you can also be in a psychological version of that. So those are examples where it's more like what you were saying: although the pain is being caused by something external, it's really you cooperating with it that is doing all the heavy lifting. But does that apply to purely emotional coercion? No.
