Don't try to time it. If you have excess cash flow, you don't have a better use for it, just give it back. So there's no assumption that the stock price is just meander sideways and you should buy at the troughs and sell at the peak set as if it's never going up over the long run. But when you sort of turn it on in that way and it gets backpedaling pretty quickly.
