How to Tell if Someone Is Trying to Enter Your Room

Someone tried to open my door. Thank god I had the cross latch pulled over, not the deadbolt though. My heart stopped as I stood there and watched the door hit the latch and fall back shut. I called the front desk and informed them that someone had just tried entering my room and I'm not staying with anyone. Ten minutes later the hotel phone starts ringing. It was the front desk attendant and she said the police were going to be coming to my room and she didn't want me to panic when I heard someone knocking on my door.
