Is Matthew Just Saying He Just Died?
There's a real dignity in this phrase. It makes it sound like the person who dies has some kind of agency and a thing that strips us of agency. That would be very in keeping with how Matthew is presenting Jesus as here fully God, fully man entirely in a physical body yet somehow still imbued with the power of God.
