The Hard Problem of Consciousness

Everything we know about the brain scientifically seems to just leave it totally open whether or not consciousness exists at all. It doesn't seem to shed any light on how consciousness comes to be. So this is what has become known as the hard problem of consciousness, the Australian philosopher David Chalmers coined that term in the 1990s. We're not going to solve an essentially philosophical question just by doing more experiments, important as experiments are to understanding consciousness.
