Clarence Thomas's Life in Segregated Savannah
Clarence's mother, Liola Williams, gave up the boys. She sent them to live at their grandfather's house. The grandfather would lock Clarence Thomas and his little brother in the hall closet for punishment. He also whipped them with a belt quite routinely. His mom has talked about how that was a very bleak period of her life.
