There's enough evidence of genetic traits of denisivins and of meanderthals to suggest that at least some of what happened is that they interbred with us. We still don't exactly know why they went away as a distinct community, how much it was competition with us that drove them out. There used to be a thought that they were sort of cognitively inferior to us. Anthropologists no longer really think that's the case,. though they do suspect that they failed to make certain kind of leaps into abstract thought about 50 ousand years ago.
