The Curvature of Space Time
The knowledge of why Mercury's orbit does what it does did not come from ever more observations being generalized into some law or induced from observations. It came from problems arising elsewhere and in the mind of a physicist working on light and magnetism and time and space. And then and only then was the solution to Mercury's orbit revealed. We explain their existence because we cannot observe them directly. They appear in our best explanations, not because we observe them, but because the explanations we create say they do. The observed existence as a unit to compare other similar existence. Amidst the measurements and unite the units in order to make the abstraction a specific mental entity.
