Doctor Is a Noun in English

Shakespeare is full of references to doctors, such as when macbeth calls to his wife's doctor. The word almost certainly predates the title, and at least prior to the eighteenth century, didn't even necessarily connote formal schooling. Controversy over titles starts to brew in the nineteenth century. Many french terms replaced anglo saxon ones after the norman invasion. But there's a second reason that was quite clear, at least to me, which is power and status.
