In part because they didn't even show you the aliens. So we're not going to put an actor in a costume and have them slither or crawl onto the set. Let's just create it, make it some entity. What I was fascinated by with contact was the study of human behavior in response to this knowledge that intelligence was found elsewhere in the galaxy. There'll be wackos, there'll be. And that's kind of spooky. It says that we look at the consequence of rampant science illiteracy. They're telling you not to handle the possibility that there could be more intelligent species out there.
