The Lady Tasting Tea by David Salzberg is a fascinating read. Many, many of these developments were to solve a substantive problem. As we'll see, some people were trying to understand fertilizer in growing corn. Remember the distribution of deaths by mule kicks in the Prussian army? Oh, yeah. A lot of what Greg and I are talking about is really, really nicely described in this book.
