Buckles is pulling from Wazinga, which interestingly, by the way, magic circle, nowhere, nowhere in this book. One of the earliest forms of literary games or like, not really even forms, but like, an early point of cultural development from which both games and literature spring is the riddle contest. This is a huge thing in Nick Montfort's book on interactive fiction, Twisty Little Passages: The riddle is somehow the ground zero for what becomes interactive fiction.
