The Crack Up Essays take their name from this extended passage where he compares himself to a cracked plate. People were so fascinated by their confessional nature, but critics did not like them. Hemingway shared an editor with Fitzgerald and wrote to the editor complaining about Fitzgerald whining in public. It sort of signaled the beginning of him at least becoming a respected great American author.
