Christian Life After Constantine's Rule

Under Constantine's rule and the edict of Milan Christian life moved out of the sphere of persecution. While this ended bloodshed, persecution took on a new life. It was a persecution of the soul by enticing the Christian to assimilate to worldly life. So Christians who wanted to maintain the austere life of the early church moved into the wilderness for this reason.
