Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws

Montesquieu is the aristotle of modern politics. He provides an analysis of forms of government and how they operate. Montesquieu argues that each is guided by a kind of what he calls a prencip a principle. The principle turns out to be the passion that sets it in motion. In the case of democracy, he sometimes says that its virtue. Sometimes he says it's the love of equality. But in the case of despotism, it's terror, it's simply fear. And one of his themes which fits in rather nicely with noah webster,. i think, more nicely than noah websters himself knew.
