The most common event that precedes death in intensive care units is a consensual decision with families to stop or limit life support. But there is a more clear line in the sand and that is when there is completely no brain function at all. And if it is irreversible and permanent, meaning cannot recover, then that person is medically and legally dead. When the brain completely stops working, that's the end of the person.
