The Power of the Land Owners in Brazil in the 1940s
Claudio: Brazil in 1940s had a very high concentration of land ownership. Because voting was actually not secret until the 1930s, power that they have on the land also generated power in terms of politics. They could exert control over how people voted. Claudio: In many poorer states, you have few families that really dominate both economic and political activity.
