The Legacy of Nixon's 1972 Visit to China

The 1972 framework that would determine the half a century US-China relationship in the decades to come, there are many facets. The most important understanding was that US-China were going to pursue common interests. And then about this political, ideological disputes, human rights, and even Taiwan, we don't talk about it. That narrow limited scope of engagement with China is great news for the Chinese because they thought we're easy and we gave up on a lot of things. Those were the specific historical conditions that really made the 1972 agreement possible.
