HoP 380 - Take Your Choice - Erasmus vs Luther on Free Will

History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps

CHAPTER

The Logic of Foreknowledge

Erasmus offered an equally familiar scholastic solution, though he ascribes to fellow humanist lorenzo falla rather than the scholastics. Luther says that when god foreknows our sins, this does render our sins necessary in the sense that they are inevitable. God knows necessarily and immutably everything that all humans will do, so their actions are inevitable. This is a thunderbolt by which free choice is completely prostrated and shattered.
