The 12 Are to Continue the Work That Jesus Has Begun
The 12 are laborers for the harvest and shepherds for the flock. They are to continue the work that jesus has started, according to the pattern that he has shown. The description that he gives them authority over unclean spirits, to cast out and to heal every disease and every affliction,. draws our mind back to chapter four, verse 23: And he went throughout all galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom. He is going to protect them from predators. And he is going to judge the unfaithful.
