i think a seminal moment in this kind of political polarization was the introduction of the facebook like button. Because then what happens is that people start craving likes, because they get their dopermine rushes. You do more and more or wich you signalling, whether you are on the left or the right or whatever. Now where does that come from? That comes from a human need for validation,. which those tools are playing to, which is why they are so effective. But there are a couple of points here.
