Another way to look for these things is in cosmic rays. A lot of discoveries have been made just by looking at the particles that come from space because they smash into our atmosphere. There's some really fun experiments that are basically the successors of Milliken's oil drop experiment. They're taking a blob of matter and they're looking to see if there's basically the kind of atom that you were talking about earlier somewhere inside this blob of matter.
