Irenaeus and the Gnostics

Irenaeus was writing against groups that he called Gnostics. He also wrote against Marcianites, followers of a man named Marcian who'd shown up in Rome in the 140s. Irenaeus taught that the Old Testament was true, but it was bad news. It came from a different God who had created the world and was kind of all into justice and law; not into love and mercy.
