In the 1960s, Peter Mitchell proposed this theory where we had these protons moving across a membrane. And that was how other processes, like simple breakdown of sugar work. A lot of quite big personalities, shall we say, were invested in these ideas. People like Ephraim Rach, E.C. Slater, Britain Chance did wonderful work. But they all really wanted to be the person winning the Nobel Prize for giving the fundamental idea of how his energy transduced within ourselves. Mike Murphy: 'It happens in science too, I'm afraid'
