In his PhD, he studied the glycans structures that are important in different biological processes. And one of the really important roles that these glycans play is in interacting with microbes and pathogenic factors. He then embarked on a postdoctoral fellowship on the gut microbiota - this dense community of microbes in our gut. In 2008, he started his lab at Stanford studying the gut microbiome in more detail.
