Hassan Al-Bassri held that sinners are believers, which Wasil found too generous. He offered what would become the standard Mu'atazalite position: Muslim sinners occupy an intermediate position neither believers nor non-believers. An unkind observer might think that Wasil's intermediate position looks less like a solution and more like dodging a politically and theologically fraught issue.
