By the 1770s there had emerged a cliche of the image of the suffering slave. Poets, novelists, essayists and above all playwrights paid homage to this theme in their works. This style originally clashed with neo-classicism but it evoked a transformation in public values. Most British and American abolitionists were deeply religious and driven by religious motivations.
