The priest has been an alien here. He is like a minister on the golf course trying to make you realize he's a good fellow too. In all other societies and frequently in our hearts, marriages are made for familial or political or economic reasons. The clergy then in our civilization sacramentalized these marriages two bodies, one flesh as though it had been love that had united them.
