The Role of the Pope in Italian Affairs

The Kingdom of Sardinia was arguably the most important and powerful Italian state, but that really isn't saying much. The old Renaissance merchant states of Genoa and Venice were still alive and kicking in 1789. It is too early to be talking about Italian unification or the resurgemento. That movement wouldn't gain momentum until even a push by Napoleon.
