The Romans may not have been directly opposing the crusade, but they were doing everything they could to slow its progress and hamper morale. The goal for Byzantine emperors in these scenarios is to be outwardly friendly while inwardly firm. With little legitimacy to call upon, there was every chance that Isaac would be stabbed in the back by one of his nobles,. particularly if the Latins lingered too long on their lands.
