What Is Autophagy and How Does It Work?

Autophagy is a vital homostatic pathway essential for cellular survival and human health. It engulfs different dysfunctional organelles and aggregate from proteins that need to be digested because they're not serving the cell anymore. This process can be triggered by multiple pathways, some of which are mTOR dependent or independent. Natural compounds such as rophomycin and trehalose have been shown to activate all these pathways. And then in aging we do see a decline in autophagy that correlates with aging.
