This brings up, I think, an interesting tension within liberalism and one that when I have had conversations with friends who, you know, I apply the liberal label to myself. We disagree quite a lot on the nuts and bolts of policy and what we should aim at when it comes to the state and institutions. But where the ultimate disagreement comes in is that for a lot of liberals their argument is a combination of kind of a practical and a almost psychological. The Western liberal democracies seem to be the the freest, wealthiest, socially tolerant and accepting states, nations, governments that the world has ever known.
