Roger Angel envisioned how to make these mirrors over a period of 10 years the mirror labs been in existence for about 40. Adaptive optics have been a revolution maybe as big as using CCDs and getting away from old glass plates. If you're going to look for extracellular planets near bright stars you want to have the diffraction limit we can reach that now thanks to adaptive optics. But there are other ways of collecting light on an exoplanet which would still be wonderful if they didn't exist.
