The Romans saw crucifixion as paradematically suited to a rebellious slave. It is excruciatingly painful and protracted, so you could survive on the cross for two, three, four days. You are up there like a piece of meat, either nailed or roped or suspended or impaled on a piece of wood on a tree. And your sufferings are objects of public ridicule.
