Hollywood is trying to angle themselves for the Chinese market. The live-action Mulan came out at a terrible time for a number of reasons. There was probably a perception within Disney walls that Chinese audiences were going to just absolutely love seeing such a big budget treatment of their mythology. But by the time it came out in 2020, Chinese audiences had grown quite accustomed to seeing their own filmmakers,. Their own movie stars, their own stories on screen. And suddenly they didn't need an American studio producing a version for them.
