Greek ancient Greek had a bunch of different ways to form imperfective stems which in Greek grammars get called presents but whatever. Different dialects chose different way to form the imperfective stem so in the Greek most of us learn in college first the word for to leave lepa is ablaut change whereas saffo her dialect used an infix antisephics giving the presentence of the same verb limpanoSo lepa limpano So that's a pretty significant change simply by deciding that this stem will go one way in one dialect and will go a different way in a different dialect. And again assuming you've had some irregularities develop some dialects might preserve those irregularities and others might smooth
