The b b c, briton's publicly owned broadcaster, is part of the european broadcasting union. The year before, the b b c had brought the e b u an intriguing proposition: why not do an international satellite link up with broadcasters throughout the world showing the same thing alive? Every country could have their own presentr but each national broadcaster would put a live section, which would be shown by all the others. Everything would be live, no prerecorded footage. And it would be a demonstration of the power of new technology to bring the world together. But few days before the broadcast, the communist block countries pulled out.
