The Role of Cognitive Decline in Loneliness

Can cognitive decline be a risk factor for loneliness? Can the relationship work in the other direction? What do we know about this? I think that it's a little bit challenging to weed through some of the literature on this. It does seem that especially in early stages of cognitive decline, either mall cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's disease, people do report increased loneliness.
