About 200 years before jesus, there is a group of jewish rulers. They start a revolution movement against egypt at the time and they are able to establish independence for the jewish people for the first time. The people of cumran defected from main stream judaism because they believed that the macabeans and the priests that they appointed were totally corrupt. So they left jerusalem and they went go live in the desert, literally, on the edge of the dead sea. And lucky for us, they took a whole bunch of scrolls of the bible with them to their little desert, desert getaway.
