The Importance of Motivation in Government
When it comes to government, we imagine this ideal world where all these elected officials exist for the common good. This gives rise to an entire branch of economics called public choice economics. In fact, and I tell my students this, if you give me two politicians who are identical in every way, save one, one has a primary goal of doing what's in the best interest of society. On average is that second guy who's going to win.
