The Athenians and the Dorian Invasion

When Menestheus died, Athens passed back to the family of Theseus. Four more kings, Demophone, Exantus, Aphiades, and Thymoatus ruled until end of 12th century BC. Melenthid dynasty didn't last very long after his death. Tradition says Codris from Medantidai family line overthrew Erecthiid king. He disguised himself as a peasant in Dorian camp but was killed on spot. The Athenians did not think they could find another king who would be as noble as him. Attica became a refuge for other Achaeans fleeing Dorian invasion. Some aristocratic Athenians trace their ancestry to these people
