The Potential of Gene Editing for Ecological Change
The idea of irreversible interference with an ecosystem I think is pretty appalling, that really, really stares me. Could we create a strain of like an invasive species or something that starts to ravage a landscape? Absolutely. So if you use gene editing to create these kinds of gene drives, that scares the life out of me. We have tried biological control and lost in the past and sometimes it's worked really, really well and other times we've done things like introduced cane toads to Australia and completely destroy entire ecosystems.
