The Bible came to be treated as the foundation myth of local Slavic nationalism. The Old Church Slavonic liturgy provided the basis from which all the literary languages of modern originally Orthodox Slavs are derived. Cyril and Matodias in gaining permission to use Slavonic texts was celebrated as an expression of the Christian Pentecost. Jacobson's discussion of these complicated historical matters emphasises the crucial role of the link between language and religion.
