Canadian scientist Suzanne Simard started as a forester and then began experiments to help her understand why furs and birch trees often grow together. Practices at the time were to actually spray with herbicides plants, native plants like birches so that it would make more room to grow conifers which were very lucrative on the market. And I saw this as undermining the actual ecosystem that we need these rich diverse plant communities for the forest to thrive"
