British historian linda colle argues that a constitution, like a novel, invents and tells the story of a place people. But what story is told by australia's constitution? Humbly relying on the blessing of almighty god, the constitution's preamble proclaims that the australian people have agreed to unite in one indissoluble, federal commonwealth under the crown. That story no longer reflects who we are. Australians have never looked to the constitution to express their identity.
