The Battle of Austria - A Brief History
Napoleon was at the height of his powers as a leader and strategist. The coalition had yet to win a single major land battle. If napoleon failed to win a decisive victory on december second, his strateg situation would become very precarious. Even a minor, limited victory would probably not be enough to stop the momentum of events from carrying the tides of war towards the coalition. France needed to land a knockout blow.
