The book came from the ashes of another book which was much more linear in construction. At a certain point I realized I wanted to capture more of the fragmentary nature of thought and especially of the way emotion moves in and out of people. So there's just one chapter that ends, a thought experiment, courtesy of the Stoics. If you are tired of everything you possess, imagine that you have lost all these things. It takes the form of like a loose thought that's just rattling around that occurs to her as she's sort of telling you what's going on in her in her character's life.
