The Disruption of Hilma Apfclint
Women artists are being exhumed, if you like, and they're work taken seriously for the first time. There's been a lot of discussion recently about the fact that Hilma Apfclint starts making her abstract works quite early on. The show at Tate Modern is not about retrofitting her into a kind of singular narrative of art history or understanding of abstraction. It's actually, by bringing her together with Mondrian, we're trying to question how we can be more expensive about how we define and think about abstraction's histories.
