"I wasn't aware of anything to do with historiography of the war. I just was trying to soak up whatever was readily available," he says. "The first time I really began to relate to the war on the printed page, years later, was reading dispatches by Michael Hare and then the bright shining light by Neil Sheon" The film is about the American experience in World War II.
