How Wolfes and Dogs Collided

Scientists think wolves and dogs split off maybe 12 to 40,000 years ago. Scientists still debate exactly how dogs came to be from wolves but one of the most commonly accepted ideas is that some wolves realized that if they spent more time near people they might get extra scraps of food. The American Kennel Club says pugs in particular are actually one of the oldest known dog breedsthey've been around for thousands of years.
